A pinch of knowledge
Baltic amber — what it actually is
It is resin. Some 40 million years ago, in the Eocene, pines growing in what is now Scandinavia and the southern Baltic released it from cracked bark. The resin hardened, sand covered it, the sea carried and polished it. That is how succinite came about — the mineralogical name for Baltic amber, derived from succinic acid, of which it contains more than other fossil resins. That, incidentally, is one of the ways to tell it apart from cheaper copal.
Inclusions occur in the pieces: a mosquito, a moth, pollen, a fragment of a leaf. An insect that, in the Eocene, stuck to the resin and remained in it forever. For a palaeontologist it is a window onto an extinct forest; for a customer — proof that the stone is genuine.
It has been traded since antiquity. The Amber Road led from the Baltic to the Adriatic, and Pliny the Elder recorded that Nero sent an expedition north for raw material for the games. Gdańsk became a centre of amber working in the Middle Ages — an amber craftsmen’s guild was active here as early as the 15th century, and Gdańsk masters made caskets, crucifixes and figurines for European courts. From that tradition the Amber Room later grew, lost in 1945.
Today Gdańsk calls itself the world capital of amber, and that is no exaggeration: the Amberif fair is held here, the amber altar stands here in St Bridget’s Church, and most Polish production is concentrated here. The largest markets are the United States and Asia — in China, Baltic amber is regarded as a status stone.
